Will Smith from Bethany School recently completed a week’s work experience with Tiga. While he was with us we asked him to write a blog - and here's what he had to say.

Many ask where I want to go and what I want to do after education, I say marketing. Those who ask, follow on by asking ‘why marketing?’ Or what do I want to do within marketing?

My mind and personality certainly lends itself towards the creative end of the spectrum rather than academics. For many years, I have loved creative subjects or activities, including art and photography. Sometimes, I watch the television and think, "What would I do with that advert?" or "What ideas would I have come up with for that company?". Another crucial reason why I aspire to be in the marketing industry is because whenever I complete something creative, whether it’s a photo sketchbook or a website, it gives me such a sense of satisfaction. Being able to do it on a constant basis would be a dream come true. All of this narrows it down for me; the way I’m wired is definitely suited to marketing - maybe digital marketing, I am yet to find out.

My jobs have included managing social media pages for various companies, being part of meetings, admin work and logging rushes

Marketing and digital marketing are considered quite specific industries, so therefore, to be involved in this game, you have to start being a player. What I mean by that is gaining experience in the field itself, which is what I am currently doing. At my school, Bethany, in Goudhurst, Kent, I was fortunate enough to be a part of the audience for an exciting talk from Elise Rappoport, a partner at the well-established creative marketing agency Tiga. When I heard about this, my instant thought was work experience, work experience, work experience! So obviously, after the talk finished, I approached Elise and asked if there was any chance of doing work experience with them. To my delight, Tiga very kindly said yes. So, for the week starting on Monday, 3rd July, I have been working with Tiga Marketing. My jobs have included managing social media pages for various companies, being part of meetings, admin work and logging rushes. But, of course, I am yet to make a cup of tea for the staff around me. I’m sure my time will come!

From my desk in Tunbridge Wells currently, I can tell you that this has been one of the best work experiences I have had; why? Well to start with its marketing and I am enjoying it more than I even thought I would, everyone is extremely welcoming and I have already learnt so much in such a short space of time. I am very grateful to Tiga Marketing for welcoming me in and giving me such an appealing insight into the marketing world.

We would like thank Will for his help during his time with us - it was a pleasure working with him.
